Gardai now have powers to arrest people who are breaching lockdown measures, facing up to 6 months in prison

Gardai have been given enormous new powers today after the Minister for Health Simon Harris said he would sign in orders last night in relation to the coronavirus restrictions.

Harris signed in the orders that will give An Gardai legal leeway to enforce coronavirus lockdown restrictions that are already implemented but that some people are flaunting.

The new laws, the government claims, are to ensure that people remain at home and are needed because many people were not adhering to the measures.

Anyone breaching the restrictions will face up to 6 months in prison or a €2,500 fine.
