Gardai publish EU-funded “Report Hate Crime Now” poster encouraging people to report “perceived” hate crime

The Gardai have produced a Hate Crime poster encouraging people in Ireland to “Report Hate Crime Now”. It is worth noting that there is no law in Ireland for hate crime however there is a Criminal Justice (Hate Crime) Bill going through the Oireachtas since November 2020.

The Bill provides for “hate crime” involving an individuals asylum or refugee status, race, colour, religion, nationality, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, transgender identity, sex characteristics, age or perceived age.

According to the hate crime poster, the Gardai have created their own definition of hate crime; Any criminal offence which is perceived, by the victim or any other person to, in whole or in part, be motivated by hostility or prejudice, based on actual or perceived age, disability, race, colour, nationality, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or gender.
