Gardai say assaults on officers have spiralled in last year with 409 recorded attacks

Yesterday, it was warned that Gardaí does not have the necessary resources to provide additional support for refugees arriving in Ireland, reports The Mirror.

The chair of the Garda Representative Association, Brendan O’Connor, questioned the government’s promise of extra gardaí and GPs for communities welcoming large numbers of asylum seekers.

He said: “There are fewer gardai, we are struggling to retain the staff we have. We are struggling to recruit and we believe the capacity is not there within those existing resources,” reports The Mirror.

He stated that there are not enough gardaí, and until this issue is addressed, there will be continuous problems with policing.

Furthermore, assaults on gardaí have increased significantly, with 409 recorded attacks last year, which is an 83% increase in the last four years.

The level of violence against officers is at an all-time high, having risen steadily from 223 in 2020 to 343 in 2022 and an additional 19% increase on that figure last year.

According to the December report of Garda Commissioner Drew Harris, 169 gardaí resigned in 2023, which is an increase from 108 in 2022 and 95 in 2021, reports The Mirror.
