GardaĆ now believe that Michael Gaine was acquainted with the person responsible for his death, reports The Mirror.

The Mirror has discovered that detectives investigating his disappearance and presumed murder have pinpointed a person of interest – someone who had a link to Mr Gaine.

ā€œThe belief now is it is unlikely this was a stranger killing,ā€ a source told us, reports The Mirror.

This significant update comes six weeks after the well-liked 56-year-old was last seen in his hometown of Kenmare – and shortly after GardaĆ upgraded the case from a missing person inquiry to a full-scale murder investigation.

We’ve learned that the individual identified – who has not yet officially been named a suspect – had frequent interactions with Mr Gaine, who was last observed at a Kenmare shop on March 20, reports The Mirror.

Since that day, there have been no confirmed sightings of Mr Gaine, and GardaĆ declared last Tuesday that the case was now classified as a homicide.

This shift indicates that investigators believe he was either intentionally killed or died due to accidental actions.

Sources told us that the person of interest is a man from the Kenmare area – but officers do not currently have the necessary evidence to treat him as a suspect or take him into custody, reports The Mirror.

ā€œThere are no grounds for arrest at the moment,ā€ a source said, reports The Mirror.

ā€œThat could change, but as of now he cannot be lifted,” reports The Mirror.

The investigation into Mr Gaine’s disappearance continues, with GardaĆ devoting substantial resources to the case. Mr Gaine worked farmland located just outside of Kenmare.

Senior GardaĆ based in Killarney upgraded the case to a homicide following a comprehensive assessment, having ruled out possibilities such as suicide or an accidental death while walking on his property, reports The Mirror.

They also reviewed his phone and bank activity – which showed no usage since March 20.

Forensic examinations were conducted on both his jeep and farm – where the vehicle was found. No traces of violence, such as blood, were detected. This suggests to GardaĆ that he may have been killed in a different location – and the absence of a struggle supports the theory that he knew his attacker.

ā€œThe probability is that he would have known whoever was responsible,ā€ a source said, reports The Mirror.

“There is a small chance that some stranger came onto the land, killed him and took his body away. But that is, at best, a remote possibility. Everything points to it being someone he knew,” reports The Mirror.

This new information follows recent emotional video appeals from Mr Gaine’s wife Janice and his sister Noreen O’Regan, pleading for help in solving the case and finding him.

Mrs Gaine said in a video released by GardaĆ on Wednesday afternoon: ā€œIf there is anybody that has any information about Michael, do please come forward and talk to the GardaĆ.

ā€œWe just want Michael to come home. We want to know what happened to him because if we can’t find Michael, I just don’t know what I am going to do and what his family, his sister Noreen…I just want Michael to come home,” reports The Mirror.

And she added: ā€œHe was my best friend, my husband. This whole thing has been devastating. He loved his home, he loved his farm, he loved farming. He loved his animals, he loved rallying. He had lots of friends, he was a very popular man and his disappearance is totally out of character – well we knew that from day one,” reports The Mirror.

And Mrs O’Regan also appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

She said: ā€œShe said: ā€œMichael was a loving husband, brother, uncle. His nieces and nephews loved him. We are absolutely heartbroken at what has happened, we are devastated. Our lives are shattered – we want answers. We love Michael – we want him back. I am appealing to anyone with any information of what happened to Michael…Michael went to the farm on the 20th of March…it was his routine to his animals. He never returned home. We are devastated – we want him back,” reports The Mirror.
