Gardai say the strange deaths of two men in Monaghan are linked

The Gardaí believe there is a link between the deaths of two men whose bodies were discovered in different locations in Co Monaghan early Thursday morning.

A 60-year-old man was found earlier with apparent stab wounds at his home in Knockreagh, Lower Broomfield, a rural area near Castleblayney.

A short time later, a 37-year-old man whom the suspected gardaí had left the house, died at Ballynacarry Bridge after being hit by a car.

Gardaí asked witnesses or anyone with information to contact them.

The house remains a crime scene and is sealed off for forensic examination.

The 60-year-old man’s body was found at around 6.30am this morning, after what appeared to be a violent assault.

His body was then transferred from the scene to the morgue of Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in Drogheda, where an autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow morning.

Gardaí says the findings will determine the course of their investigation.

There was no record of a burglary in the house.

Shortly after the man’s body was found, the gardaís were called to the scene of a nearby road accident at Ballynacarry Bridge near the border with Northern Ireland.

The 37-year-old man died after being hit by a car on the N53 at around 7am. His body was also taken to Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in Drogheda for an autopsy.

The road was reopened following the accident.

Detectives suspect the man who was knocked down and killed may have been at the Broomfield house earlier, where the other man died violently.

They also believe they have identified the victims and are working to establish any connection between them, if they knew each other and if there was any personal animosity between them or allegations surrounding either of them.
