Jim Gavin’s entire Presidential campaign was one mistake, gaff and blunder after another. He stood basically no chance of being elected and has finally pulled out.
The Fianna Fail party is said to be in absolute disarray over the whole debacle, with many blaming the Taoiseach Micheal Martin for promoting Gavin in the first place.
According to RTE, Gavin said “I made a mistake that was not in keeping with my character and the standards I set myself. I am now taking steps to address the matter.
“I have also thought long and hard about the potential impact of the ongoing campaign on the wellbeing of my family and friends.
“Taking all these considerations on board, I have decided to withdraw from the presidential election contest with immediate effect and return to the arms of my family.”
Mr. Gavin is investigating claims that he owes a former tenant €3,300, stating he lacks full details on the issue. The dispute, reported by the Irish Independent, involves a former tenant and coincides with a period of financial hardship for Mr. Gavin’s family.
Between 2007 and 2009, a couple renting Mr. Gavin’s apartment in the north inner city continued to pay rent via standing order due to a banking error, even after canceling it. The tenant informed the newspaper that €3,300 was mistakenly paid to Mr. Gavin and requested acknowledgment of the error and a refund.
