Police have warned locals of possible airborne toxins after a fire broke out in several storage facilities in the German city of Hamburg this morning, reports RTE.

The fire, which is still burning, broke out around 4:00 am local time after which around 140 people were safely evacuated.

The police spokesman said it was not yet possible to say how dangerous the situation was, reports RTE.

Residents were asked to stay indoors with the windows closed and the ventilation and air conditioning systems turned off.

Authorities said the fire broke out in Rothenburgsort, a few kilometers southeast of central Hamburg, and a cloud of smoke was drifting towards the city centre.

A police spokesman said the sky darkened as a result, but the weather made it difficult to determine how much smoke and how much cloud, reports RTE.

The spokesman said police and firefighters were currently assessing the situation.

An emergency telephone line is operational for citizens.
