Denmark, Norway and Sweden’s largest airliner, SAS, has been forced to restrict a YouTube video featuring an advertisement which declared that nothing is truly Scandinavian and that all the regions culture is “borrowed”.
The bizarre ad, which has online commentators asking how exactly is such a strategy, which denigrates Scandinavian culture meant to sell airline tickets?
The 2.42 second video features people from a non-Scandinavian background, such as a black man, declaring that he is no better than his “Viking ancestors. “
The ad states that all the things Scandinavians take pride in “democracy, bicycles, wind power plants” were all “borrowed”.
It is also even mockingly quipped in the ad “It gets worse. Rumour has it that the oh-so-Swedish meatballs might not be as Swedish as you think, but Turkish,”.
The ad has provoked outrage online with the video being massively down voted on YouTube and comments being banned.
The question being posed online is, would such proclamations by a major corporation regarding any culture, other than a European one, be acceptable?
