There has been worldwide expression of disgust and condemnation of a leading Irish Muslim after he spoke out defense of female circumcision.
Dr Ali Selim, a lecturer at Trinity College Dublin, has said that he is an advocate of “female circumcision” if it is advised by a doctor and says the practice should be legalised in Ireland.
The practice is more commonly referred to as Female Genital Mutilation or FGM.
A global campaign was launched in Dublin earlier this month to end the barbaric practice that is common amongst the Muslim community as it is advised praised in the Hadith, the sayings of the Prophet Mohammed, who called it noble but not mandatory.
Dr. Selim of Ireland’s Islamic Cultural Centre has been an outspoken proponent of Islamic issues in the country.
However, his comments on FGM have been picked up by media outlets across the Western World and have been met with near universal derision.
