There was good news for advanced melanoma patients in the South West as it was announced earlier today that ground-breaking therapies not currently on the open market will be made available to them.
The new trial comes after the first dedicated melanoma multidisciplinary team (MDT) consisting of dermatologists, plastic surgeons, surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, radiotherapists, research nurses, celebrated its 10 anniversary this year.
Speaking about the trial dermatologist Dr Michelle Murphy said the dedicated work by the team over the past ten years has led to further opportunities and as a result, patients could access drugs not available on prescription.
Dr Murphy also said diagnosing melanoma early is highly important and treatment options can be effective.
It is believed there are currently three clinical trials open for advanced melanoma at Cork University Hospital (CUH).
