The Government have formally approved proposals that will see a new bypass around the city of Galway.

In what will be a €600m development, a 18km ring road will be placed around the city in order to alleviate traffic congestion in the city.

Although the new proposals will go before An Bord Pleanála, it is expected that the new bypass will be given full backing once the City Council submits its proposals.

The the new ring road is expected to to be provide a link between the east and west of the city which will ultimately result in less traffic congestion in the city centre.

It is understood the idea of a bypass has been repeatedly discussed in recent years.

However the plan has never come to fruition after rulings deemed the project as having to to many environmental implications.
