
The Government have confirmed this morning that plain packaging on cigarette and tobacco products will come into effect next May.
The news was announced by the Minister for Health Simon Harris has in the Dáil late last night. The move which will most likely anger cigarette and tobacco companies will also see a number of graphic Health warning images on the packaging.
Announcing the new legislation Mr Harris said: “The regulation of the appearance of tobacco packaging is aimed at improving public health – by doing this the appeal of tobacco products will be less enticing to consumers.”
Mr Harris also said the inclusion of more graphic health warning images will encourage the public to quit smoking.
