Several weeks after the ill-advised decision to locate the new children’s hospital at a site near St. James’ Hospital in Dublin was taken, tens of thousands of people have now signed a petition asking the Government to reconsider such potentially catastrophic choice.
The petition was handed over yesterday by the Connolly for Kids campaign.
Both campaigners and a large sector of the medical profession agree that the site at St. James is wrong in terms of access by road and air, as ambulances transporting critically ill children would have to negotiate heavily congested traffic across the capital’s city centre streets. This could lead to delays and the unnecessary endangering of a child’s life.
Campaigners propose building the new facility on a greenfield site at Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown instead, stating that it can be easily accesed, and has great potential for extension.
