Government rushes to deny reports that there will be a need for border checks in the event of a no-deal Brexit

The government have denied a report by Bloomberg that they have acknowledged the necessity of border checks between the Republic and the North in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

In an article on the business and markets news website it was reported that

“Ireland is set to acknowledge publicly for the first time the need to set up checks at or around its border with Northern Ireland in a no-deal Brexit scenario, people familiar with the matter said.”

A spokesperson for the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney reemphasised the government’s official line which is that they have two primary and equal objectives – avoiding a hard border and – maintaining the EU Single Market.

They also said that there are no plans for border checks in the case of any scenario.

However, EU officials have said in the past that should a no-deal Brexit materialise the government of the Republic of Ireland will be responsible for policing an external border of the EU in the same way Latvia has a hard border with Russia for example.
