Government set to introduce new laws that will give harsher sentences to those found guilty of revenge porn or upskirting

The Government have backed proposals that will see the acts of revenge pornography and upskiriting a criminal offence.

Under the new legislation proposals those who are found guilty of sharing intimate images could be given a lengthy prison sentence and be placed on the Sex Offenders Register.

Although the Government are keen to pass the legislation before the summer recess, the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and the Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan have said some amendments have to be made to the initial draft text.

It is understood the proposed Bill which was submitted before the Dail in 2016, by Labour Party leader Brendan Howlin, will make it a criminal offence to share intimate images of a person or person a criminal offence.

The new laws will reportedly cover all forms of material and not just online material.

It is expected that the new Bill will receive overwhelming support in the Dail as many TDs in the past have argued that current legislation to tackle such issues is outdated.
