Government urged to introduce new regulations that will actively monitor charities

There are strong calls today for the Government to introduce new regulations for charity organisations.

The Government have been urged to follow their UK counterparts and introduce new measures that would actively monitor how charitable donations are handled in the future.

The call comes as a number of investigations are continuing into financial irregularities at certain charities nationwide including suicide prevention and bereavement charity Console.

According to Sheila Nordon Executive Director of the support group for the sector ICTR, the issue needs to be addressed sooner rather than later as current charity laws are not adequate.

Ms Nordon said: “Company law was designed for private companies, however there is a standard that has been developed for clarities.”

“The charity commission in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are adopting it and we expect it to be brought in here. It spells out where the money comes from and how it’s used”
