Government vows to ‘tackle mortgage arrears crisis’ before next election

Balancing the Accounts

In another pre-election promise, the Government has vowed to do something about the widespread mortgage arrears problem.

About 11,000 private residential mortgage accounts remained in arrears at the end of 2014, a 14.5% of all accounts.

The Government is said to be working on expanding the mortgage-to-rent scheme, to enable people experiencing difficulties paying their mortgage to switch to renting their home as social tenants.
