Govt doing all they can to house refugees as the number of migrant spaces falls short of international convention

Even with a two-year plan to treble the number of refuge places in Ireland, the number of spaces needed to address domestic abuse as mandated by the Istanbul Convention will not be met, reports Breaking News.

Ireland has ratified the Convention, which is a legally enforceable plan to address sexual and domestic abuse.

It coincides with the launch on Friday of Cuan, a new domestic violence agency, by Justice Minister Helen McEntee, reports Breaking News.

Cuan will oversee and provide updates on the implementation of the government’s zero tolerance policy on gender-based, sexual, and domestic abuse.

Additionally, the organisation will provide accessible and secure refuge housing; by the end of 2026, there will be 280 units available nationally.

Ms McEntee said: “The target that we have set is for this strategy and this strategy alone. We will of course be ambitious and want to go beyond that. But we have to be realistic in terms of what we can achieve between now and the end of 2026,” reports Breaking News.
