Govt slammed as energy prices have jumped by over 15% in year to April, CSO shows

Energy costs increased by 15.5% in the 12 months leading up to April, according to figures released by the Central Statistics Office.

Meanwhile, food prices are estimated to have risen by 2% over the same 12-month period, based on the latest data from the CSO, reports RTE.

The CSO stated that the annual inflation rate up to April is estimated at 3.6%, unchanged from the 12 months to March, when inflation rose notably בעקבות the sharp increase in oil prices linked to the Iran war.

Anthony Dawson, a statistician with the CSO, said, “The collection of prices for April 2026 took place between 13-23 April which means that some fuel prices would have been collected before the extra Government measures on fuel costs were introduced,” reports RTE.

He added that inflation excluding energy and unprocessed food is estimated to have increased by 2.3% since April 2025.

These figures are based on the EU Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices, reports RTE.

The Department of Finance indicated last week that inflation could average between 3.3% and 4.6% this year, depending on how energy prices are affected by the ongoing Middle East conflict.
