GRA call for expedition in issuing of body cameras and tasers to gardai

The Garda Representative’s Association (GRA) is calling for mandatory minimum penalties for assaults on frontline responders and is urging the government to speed up the issuance of body cameras and tasers to all guards, reports RTE.

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris will address the conference this morning at the opening in Co Mayo.

The security of its members, the high number of Gardaí leaving the organization and the limitations on their ability to govern the state are the main themes of the GRA’s annual conference, which begins today, reports RTE.

Cavan and Monaghan’s rank and file guards are told they have to cross the border into Northern Ireland to gain access to parts of the kingdom, putting them and the public at risk because armed officers cannot carry their guns.

Officials are also extremely critical of what they say is the unfair treatment of Gardai, who remain suspended for years and are ultimately found innocent.

An exit survey conducted by the GRA also suggests that increasing numbers of Gardai are leaving the force early due to bullying and stress, reports RTE.

The association also welcomed GSOC’s decision to ask Gardai to investigate claims by one of its former officers that he attended a party with Gerard “The Monk” Hutch, stating that the Gardaí were the appropriate authority to investigate possible crime to investigate.
