Green Party leader Eamon Ryan claims Ireland’s electricity supply will be ‘very tight’ for up to the next 4 years

Eamon Ryan has said that Ireland’s electricity supply will be “very tight” for up to the next 4 years.

According to the Sun, Ryan said: “There is a real issue. It has been very tight. It is very tight. Even the next number of weeks before those stations come back up we’ll have a very tight supply issue.”

Ryan said Ireland could face extremely “tight” energy supplies for up to the next four years while the Government comes up with a wind energy strategy and back up power in battery and gas fired systems.

He said: “It’s a very tight situation for the next two to three to four years while we build up some of those battery and gas fired back up systems.

The Sun reports Ryan said: “We need that additional gas generation as back up but we’ll be using less gas because in our island the wind blows most of the time. You only use it as a back up.

“So we’re clear and confident that we can meet our climate change targets. It is tight and it is tight because those two large gas plants were out of action for a year.

“A lot of other plants because of Covid are having to go through maintenance. So we’re very conscious of that.”

In what could be deemed a threatening tone, Ryan said: “No one is exempt from the need to add to our climate targets, meeting our climate targets and providing energy security.

“We won’t see projects going ahead if they don’t have that capability to fit into a low carbon energy secure system.”
