Hard man Harris to chair consultative group to help Ireland prepare for possible trade shocks

The Consultative Group on International Trade will hold its inaugural meeting on Wednesday and will examine possible US tariffs, reports Breaking News.

The committee, led by Tánaiste Simon Harris, was established two weeks ago with the goal of assisting Ireland in being ready for any possible trade shocks, especially those originating from the United States.

State agencies, business organisations, and politicians will all be present during the conference at Government Buildings, reports Breaking News.

Harris discussed the rationale behind forming the group in a speech to the Dáil two weeks ago.

“On February 5th 2025, the Government agreed to my proposal to establish a Consultative Group on International Trade Policy. The Group is being established to facilitate engagement with key domestic stakeholders on the latest and emerging trade and investment development opportunities. In line with the transfer in responsibilities for trade policy to my Department in the Programme for Government, it will be chaired by me as Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade,” reports Breaking News.

He stated that it is crucial that we “maintain a strategic focus on the international trading environment” since we are a tiny, highly globalised economy.

The Tánaiste went on to say that the Group will concentrate on all aspects of Ireland’s commercial connections, including developing markets, EU trade agreements, and how to best further Ireland’s economic interests with our biggest bilateral trading partners, reports Breaking News.

“Membership of the Consultative Group will include Ministers and senior officials from other relevant Government Departments, and senior business and sectoral representatives including from relevant business representative groups and organisations, senior leadership from state agencies including Enterprise Ireland, Bord Bia and IDA Ireland,” reports Breaking News.

According to Mr. Harris, the forum will also interact with important companies and senior business executives, who will be asked to attend meetings based on the subjects and geographical areas covered.

Additionally, attendees would be selected from a variety of companies and strategically significant industries, taking into account regional diversity and gender parity, reports Breaking News.
