There have been fresh calls today for mandatory jail sentences for people who assault of a member of the gardai.
New statistics released say that not all gardai who are assaulted report the incident and that even when they do, if they don’t take a total of 3 full sick days off work then it’s not officially recorded by the State body.
Gardai have today called for a mandatory set jail term for people arrested for causing such an assault. They say that a minimum jail sentence would be a deterrent in the future.
However, it’s also been claimed today that there should be a mandatory jail sentence for any sort of assault to a member of the general public in an effort to curtail violence in society.
