Harris thanks the gardai for all they did after they were heavy-handed with patriots in Newtownmountkennedy

Simon Harris, the Taoiseach, denounced Thursday night’s attacks on gardaí during a rally in County Wicklow that was held inside a location designated to house applications for international protection.

Speaking in Wicklow, Harris said: “You don’t protest in this country with an axe. You don’t engage in protest that involves fire, that involves burning things, that involves thuggery and that involves assaulting members of An Garda Síochána or their vehicles,” reports RTE.

“That is socially unacceptable and reprehensible behaviour in this country,” Harris said, reports RTE.

He expressed his gratitude to the gardaí for their efforts in upholding the law.

“There are laws, the laws apply to all and the laws will be enforced,” he stated, reports RTE.

According to Justice Minister Helen McEntee, nobody viewing photos from last night would argue against the gardaí’s strategy.

During yesterday’s protest in Newtown Mount Kennedy, six persons were taken into custody.

Of them, one man was charged and freed to appear in court at a later time; three men and a woman have been charged and are scheduled to appear before the district court today, reports RTE.
