A total of 52 individuals from Gaza are set to arrive in Ireland over the next few days to begin their studies at various educational institutions located across the island, reports Breaking News.
On Thursday, Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Harris announced that the group of Palestinians is expected to arrive soon.
The initial group of 26 students is due to land on Thursday, while the rest, all of whom have been granted scholarships by different institutions, are scheduled to arrive from Friday through Sunday, reports Breaking News.
Efforts to coordinate this journey have involved the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, along with its embassies in Israel, Palestine, Jordan, and Türkiye, working in close cooperation with appropriate authorities.
According to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, over 200 individuals have been helped to leave Gaza and relocate to Ireland since Israel launched its military operations in the area, reports Breaking News.
The department noted that because departure from Gaza relies on approval from the appropriate local authorities in both Israel and nearby regions, “such assistance often rests outside the control of the Government of Ireland.”
Mr Harris said in a statement: “I welcome the arrival of these Palestinian young people to Ireland, and wish them every success with their studies here. I want to thank our diplomatic and consular staff in the region and at headquarters for their huge efforts to bring about this outcome. We remain gravely concerned about the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza, including the recent decision of the Israeli authorities to escalate their military offensive,” reports Breaking News.
“This will only exacerbate the current suffering and ever-rising number of civilian casualties. Famine has been declared in parts of the Gaza Strip and is projected to spread further in the coming weeks. There is no justification for this man-made humanitarian crisis. Ireland has consistently called for an immediate ceasefire agreement and permanent end to hostilities, for the immediate release of all hostages and for the rapid, unimpeded and large-scale entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza,” reports Breaking News.
