Have you noticed? Grocery price inflation rises to 6.8%

New data indicates that grocery price inflation is still on an upward trend.

Figures from Worldpanel by Numerator show the inflation rate rose from 6.25% to 6.82% over the 12 weeks ending 25 January, reports RTE.

The data also shows grocery sales in Ireland increased by 5% during the four-week period to 25 January, with consumers spending a total of €1.2 billion.

Worldpanel by Numerator said that although shoppers made slightly more shopping trips than during the same period last year, they bought 1.9% fewer packs year on year, “highlighting continued caution among Irish consumers as grocery inflation rose”, reports RTE.

Online grocery shopping continues to grow in popularity, with sales rising by 7% year on year to reach a 5.8% share of total value.

Worldpanel by Numerator said shoppers spent an extra €15 million online, with close to 20% of Irish households buying groceries online during the most recent 12-week period, reports RTE.

Looking at overall retailer market share, Dunnes leads with 24.8%, followed closely by Tesco at 24.4%, while SuperValu holds 19.4%, Lidl 13.2% and Aldi 10.4%.

The report also found that Irish consumers spent an additional €454,000 on low and non-alcoholic drinks in January, reports RTE.

“Spending on fresh fruit, chilled smoothies, juices and yoghurts was also on the rise, increasing by more than €8.1 million, while healthcare sales increased 6.8% year on year,” Worldpanel by Numerator said, reports RTE.

The figures further show that own-label products made up 43.4% of total grocery spending, an increase of 0.7 percentage points compared to the previous month.

Shoppers spent more than €1.7 billion on own-label products over the most recent 12-week period, reports RTE.

“The strong performance of premium own label goods also continued, with growth standing at 5%, while branded products remained resilient, growing 7.3%,” Worldpanel by Numerator added, reports RTE.
