“He fixed the health service” – HSE chief executive Bernard Gloster steps down next March on massive pension

Some supporters of the soon-to-be HSE Chief are saying on social media that he fixed the health service, while others say he did a terrible job. Either way, he’s retiring on a massive pension.

Bernard Gloster, the chief executive of the HSE, has revealed that he will be stepping down from his position in March 2026, reports Breaking News.

The HSE made the announcement on Tuesday, confirming that he plans to retire from public service after nearly 38 years working in the health sector by that time.

He is scheduled to conclude his role on March 5th, 2026, marking the end of a three-year term as the HSE’s chief executive officer, reports Breaking News.

Mr Gloster has held the CEO position since March 2023, following his appointment to the role in December 2022.

Speaking about his decision, Mr Gloster stated he intends to “serve in this very important role and for the coming months I will be working hard with the Board, the Minister, and the Department to advance many improvements and responses to challenges,” reports Breaking News.

“I wanted to bring certainty to the future leadership of the organisation as I am now in my third year as CEO. I have today submitted my resignation to the Chair of the HSE, Ciaran Devane and Minister Carroll MacNeill, allowing time to prepare for the next phase of leadership of our health and personal social services. I will retire from the public service on March 5th, 2026. I also want to express my deep appreciation to all of our staff for the work they continue to do every day to serve the public,” he said, reports Breaking News.
