Sadly, it’s emerged that Fr John Murray was due to retire from his ministry next week – before he was horrendously attacked.

The Liberal understands that a man asked Fr John Murray for confession on Sunday morning before he was brutally attacked with a glass bottle to the head.

It’s understand that the man who asked for confession is linked a murder in a house on the other side of the town.

Police in Downpatrick, Co Down have started a murder inquiry after a man was found dead in a house in the Co Down town.

The PSNI said that a man aged in his 30s has been arrested.

“Detectives from our Major Investigation Team have launched a murder investigation following the death of man in Downpatrick.

“A man aged in his 30s has been arrested.”, reports RTE.

Police remain at a scene at Marian Park in the town, where it’s understood that the ambulance service had been called to this house last night just before midnight.

It comes as police investigate the serious assault of a priest in a church in Downpatrick this morning after he was struck in the head with an bottle.

The PSNI said it suspects the two incidents are linked.
