“He was a wonderful man” – World leaders pay tribute to Pope Francis following his death at 88

World leaders have united in mourning the death of Pope Francis, who passed away today, Easter Monday, at the age of 88 in his Vatican residence, Casa Santa Marta. The pontiff’s death, announced by Cardinal Kevin Farrell at 9:45 AM CEST, has prompted an outpouring of tributes celebrating his legacy as a tireless advocate for peace, compassion, and the marginalised.
Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin called Francis “an exceptional leader,” saying, “His compassion for the poor and his calls for peace touched millions. Ireland and the world have lost a remarkable voice for humanity.” French President Emmanuel Macron praised his humility, noting, “From Buenos Aires to Rome, he brought joy and hope to the poorest, uniting people with nature and each other.” Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking from the White House, said, “He was a good man who loved the world. We’re here for all Catholics,” ordering flags to fly at half-mast.
Britain’s King Charles III, who met Francis earlier this month, expressed a “heavy heart,” stating, “His tireless commitment to unity and compassion will be remembered forever.” Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, visibly emotional, described him as “a great shepherd,” adding, “His friendship and teachings guided me through trials.” UN Secretary-General António Guterres hailed him as “a transcendent voice for peace and human dignity,” reflecting a global sentiment echoed from Argentina to East Timor.
Francis, the first Latin American pope, died a day after delivering his final Easter blessing in St. Peter’s Square, a frail but defiant act following a 38-day hospital battle with double pneumonia earlier this year. His passing marks the end of a 12-year papacy defined by humility and reform. As the Vatican begins its mourning period, leaders worldwide prepare to attend his funeral, expected within days, while the conclave to choose his successor looms.
