The Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has said that the Government will speed up its Covid-19 vaccine plans with the aim of getting every nursing home resident jabbed within the next fortnight.
In a move to combat the fast spread of the virus, Donnelly confirmed that 65 vaccination teams including hospital vaccinators, community vaccinators, school vaccinators and the National Ambulance Service. Vaccinations will be working seven days a week in order to complete first round of vaccinations.
The decision to speed up the vaccination programme comes as the country deals with the rising surge of Covid-19 cases, with Donnelly saying speed is of the essence especially with the most vulnerable in society.
The Health Minister also said the decision also comes after Pfizer and BioNtech have given reassurances that more vaccines will be constant.
It is expected that in the region of 75,000 nursing home residents and staff will receive the first dose of the vaccine before the original deadline of the end of January.
The developments come as it was announced on Friday that Ireland will receive an 3.3 million vaccines following an agreement between the European Medicines Agency and Pfizer.
