Prominent football journalist and Princeton University graduate Grant Wahl died during the World Cup in Qatar. He was 49 years old.
Wahl – who was reporting on his eighth World Cup series – wrote on his website earlier in the week that his “body finally broke down” and that he was taking antibiotics for bronchitis.
He was also arrested late last month for wearing an LGBTQIA+ jersey in the US World Cup opener against Wales, as gay and lesbian sex is criminalized in Qatar. He was held for 25 minutes before being released by a senior security official, he wrote at the time.
Wahl covered the Princeton Tigers football team while at Princeton and continued to work for Sports Illustrated after graduating in 1996 until 2021. He spent time at Fox Sports from 2012 to 2019 and launched his website last year.
He leaves behind his wife, Dr. Celine Gounder.
