Gardaí have confirmed that the search for a man who had been missing from Mayo for five days has been stood down following the discovery of a body.
Padraig Dooley, aged 66, had been reported missing from Charlestown since Wednesday, 1 April, reports The Mirror.
Gardaí launched a public appeal shortly after his disappearance, describing Padraig as standing 5′ 9″ tall, of strong build with black hair.
Officers confirmed he was last seen on the morning of Wednesday, 1 April in Ballaghaderreen, Roscommon, wearing a dark coloured fleece, tan trousers, a high visibility vest and black shoes, reports The Mirror.
They appealed for anyone with information to come forward. At the time, a Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí are appealing to the public for assistance in tracing the whereabouts of Padraig Dooley (66), who was reported missing from Charlestown, Co. Mayo since Wednesday 1st April 2026.
“Padraig is described as being approximately 5 foot 9 inches in height, of strong build, with black hair, reports The Mirror.
“Padraig was last seen wearing a dark coloured fleece, tan trousers, a high visibility vest and black shoes on the morning of Wednesday 1st April 2026 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.
“Anyone with any information on Padraig’s whereabouts are asked to contact Ballina Garda Station on 096 20560, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station,” reports The Mirror.
In a deeply saddening update tonight, gardaí confirmed that the missing persons appeal had been stood down following the discovery of a body, and extended their thanks to the public for their assistance.
A Garda spokesperson said: “Following the discovery of a body, the missing person appeal in respect of Padraig Dooley (66), who was reported missing from Charlestown, Co. Mayo since Wednesday 1st April 2026, has been stood down, reports The Mirror.
“No further media attention is required. An Garda Síochána would like to thank the public and the media for their assistance,” reports The Mirror.
