Helen McEntee slammed for saying only 4,500 people were refused permission into Ireland across the Northern Irish border in 2024

So far this year, there has been a 164% rise in the number of persons who have been denied entry to Ireland through the Northern Irish border, reports The Mirror.

Nearly 4,500 individuals have been denied “permission to land,” or entry into Ireland, according to recent statistics.

For a number of reasons, such as not having a valid passport or visa, not being able to support oneself and any dependents, or planning to start working while without a permit, immigration officials may deny someone entry into Ireland, reports The Mirror.

If someone is denied entry, they may be imprisoned or deported back to their own country.

Justice Minister Helen McEntee stated earlier this year that more persons from the North were coming to the International Protection Office to apply for refuge. At the time, the government stated that they thought these individuals had come from the United Kingdom.

According to statistics Minister McEntee provided to Aontu leader Peadar Toibin, as of September 30, 177 individuals had been denied admission into Ireland across the border.

Compared to 2023, when 67 persons were denied entrance, this represented a 164% increase. Compared to 91 in 2021, only 44 persons were turned away at the border in 2022, reports The Mirror.

As of September 30, 13.5 million travellers had landed in the nation at Dublin Airport this year. Approximately 1,764 of these lacked paperwork, and 3,843 were sent away. At Dublin Port, another 190 people were denied access, while at Rosslare Port, 61 passengers were denied entry.

Minister McEntee said: “My Department has recorded a 34 per cent reduction in 2023 in the number of persons arriving in the State without the correct documentation. 2024 has seen a further reduction in the numbers arriving without documentation,” reports The Mirror.
