Helen McEntee wants to extend protection for Ukrainians in Ireland




Justice Minister Helen McEntee will ask the Cabinet to agree to extend temporary protection until March 2025 for Ukrainians who have fled from the war to Ireland, reports Breaking News.

As reported by the Irish Examiner, the government has already extended this protection until March next year, but due to the ongoing invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces, Ms McEntee is seeking to extend it again.

Also in government, Tánaiste Michael Martin committed to developing a defence strategy framework when the Independent Review Group (IRG) report was published earlier this year.

The plan is to create an overall strategic framework for the transformation of the defence forces and to put together the immediate steps required to build a defence force intended to meet current and future challenges, reports Breaking News.

The first phase of transformation focuses on culture, including new management and reporting processes.

Separately, the Minister for Children, Roderick O’Gorman, will present a note to the Minister outlining the establishment of an administrative program to enable family members associated with the Tuam Mother and Baby Home to voluntarily provide a DNA sample prior to excavating the site. and lifting, reports Breaking News.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister Eamonn Ryan will present a note warning Cabinet colleagues of a €14bn shortfall in the National Development Plan, which will require the axing of some key infrastructure projects.
