Enoch Burke, the former Irish schoolteacher whose defiance of court orders has kept him in the spotlight, received a sharp rebuke during a High Court hearing in Dublin. According to *The Irish Times*, Mr. Justice David Nolan compared Burke’s disruptive courtroom behavior to that of an “unruly schoolboy” as the court addressed unpaid fines and legal costs totaling €79,100. These penalties stem from Burke’s refusal to obey injunctions prohibiting him from entering Wilson’s Hospital School in County Westmeath.
Burke’s saga began in 2022 when he was suspended for rejecting a transgender student’s preferred pronouns, a stance he tied to his evangelical Christian beliefs. Dismissed in January 2023 for gross misconduct, he persisted in showing up at the school, amassing over 500 days in prison for contempt. In the latest hearing, Burke, acting as his own counsel, repeatedly spoke over the judge. According to *The Irish Times*, Nolan told him, “This is not a soapbox. You are a schoolteacher and know all about unruly schoolboys. You are acting like an unruly schoolboy.” The judge later described Burke’s actions as “disruptive and rude” and “disgraceful,” per the same source.
The proceedings turned tumultuous when Burke’s mother, Martina, and sister, Ammi, disrupted from the gallery. According to The Irish Times, Martina shouted that the case was “all lies,” while Ammi accused the judge of “telling lies,” leading to their removal by gardaí. Despite Burke’s attempts to argue constitutional issues, the court awarded costs against him to the school and the Attorney General. With €40,627.89 already seized from his bank account and additional funds from his salary, Burke’s case continues to fuel Ireland’s debate over religious freedom and legal accountability.
