Enoch Burke, a former teacher at Wilson’s Hospital School in County Westmeath, Ireland, returned to the school’s premises despite being sacked in January 2023 and facing ongoing legal restrictions. Burke, an evangelical Christian, was dismissed following a dispute over his refusal to use a transgender student’s preferred pronouns, which led to a confrontation with the school’s then-principal in 2022. His persistent appearances at the school, in defiance of a High Court injunction, have resulted in multiple imprisonments and significant fines.

Burke arrived at the school as it reopened for the new term, continuing his protest against what he describes as a violation of his religious beliefs. The High Court has imposed daily fines of €1,400 for breaching the injunction, with over €40,000 already seized from his bank account. Despite these penalties, Burke remains defiant, claiming that students welcomed him, with some waving from classrooms, though his presence has been criticized by students and the school board as disruptive.

The school has indicated it may seek further legal action, including potential re-imprisonment, if Burke continues to violate the court order. Burke, still receiving his full teaching salary pending an appeal of his dismissal, remains a polarizing figure, with supporters praising his stand for religious freedom and critics condemning his actions as disruptive and harmful to the school community. The case continues to spark debate over religious rights, transgender issues, and legal compliance in Ireland.
