Here comes Nigel! Hurricane strengthens over the Atlantic as it moves towards Ireland

Hurricane Nigel strengthened to a Category 2 on Tuesday afternoon and could intensify further in the coming days before weakening far out into the Atlantic Ocean, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said, reports Breaking News.

By late Tuesday, Nigel’s maximum wind speed had increased to 160 km/h, up from 145 km/h the previous day when it was a strong Category 1 hurricane.

The system was located approximately 955 km east of Bermuda and was moving north-northwest at a speed of 22 km/h.

Forecasters say the island region could experience Nigel surges, which could create life-threatening waves and rip currents.

No coast guards or warnings were issued because the storm was so far from land, reports Breaking News.

The Miami Hurricane Center says Nigel may strengthen slightly on Wednesday but will begin to weaken on Thursday and Friday before becoming a strong post-tropical cyclone on Friday.

Nigel’s remnants are expected to appear near the Irish coast, with strong winds and rain expected over the weekend. It will be relatively easy.

“During the hurricane season, you can quite often get the remnants of a hurricane which is carrying warm, moist air,” explained Met Éireann forecaster Andrew Doran-Sherlock, reports Breaking News.
