A new strain of Covid-19 has been found in Eris, UK, reports The Mirror.
The new variant is becoming more common, with one in seven people infected with Covid-19 in the UK believed to have contracted the strain.
The variant has been added to the World Health Organization watch list under the designation EG.5.1 shortly after the variant appeared in May.
The new strain has not yet been listed as a variant of concern.
According to the HSE, there are currently no cases of EG.5.1 or Eris in Ireland, however, the health service recently confirmed to INMO that there were high levels of outbreaks in hospitals, reports The Mirror.
As of August 7, 365 people with Covid-19 are in the hospital. On the same day, there were 11 cases in the ICU.
Although this strain has yet to reach Ireland, it is advisable to be aware of the signs and symptoms of a new strain that is rapidly dominating the UK. The symptoms are as follows:
- Sore throat
- Cold
- Stuffed nose
- Sneeze
- Dry cough
- Headache
- Wet cough
- Hoarse voice
- Muscle aches
- Altered smell
According to the Joe Health Study, the main symptoms are the same as symptoms of widespread omicrons, reports The Mirror.
