The HSE has called on the public to familiarise themselves with the signs and symptoms of norovirus after new figures revealed a significant increase in reported cases, reports Breaking News.

A total of 86 cases were recorded in the week ending February 7th, up from 56 the previous week — representing a 54 per cent rise, reports Breaking News.

Norovirus, often referred to as the winter vomiting bug, is among the most widespread stomach viruses in Ireland.

It leads to symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea and can spread rapidly in shared environments including hospitals, nursing homes and schools, reports Breaking News.

The HSE said it has been notified of 676 cases so far this winter season, which began at the end of September.

Of the cases recorded this week, 59 per cent involved individuals aged 65 and over, reports Breaking News.

In a statement, the State’s health service said: “While these illnesses are unpleasant but mild for many, they can be very serious for older adults, young children and people with underlying health conditions. The seasonal surge in winter viruses puts extra pressure on health and care services,” reports Breaking News.

The HSE advised anyone affected by the virus to remain at home from work, school and social events for at least 48 hours and to refrain from visiting hospitals or residential care facilities.

It also stressed the importance of strict hygiene practices, including frequent handwashing with soap and water, disinfecting contaminated surfaces with bleach-based products, and avoiding raw or unwashed food produce, reports Breaking News.

Dr Paul McKeown, a consultant in public health medicine, said: “Norovirus cases have been at high levels in recent weeks and outbreaks in hospitals have increased.

“It’s not always possible to avoid getting norovirus, but you can help stop the virus spreading,” reports Breaking News.
