There will be an historic moment later today as the Port Of Cork’s Deepwater Berth in Ringaskiddy, will go into the record books for housing the largest ship to ever at an Irish port later today.

The south coast port will see the MV Northern Dedication dock at its shores this morning, after its long voyage across the atlantic from Central America. It is also understood that the massive vessel will be carrying over 75 containers of fresh fruit, predominantly Fyffes bananas with each container carrying more than 100,000 bananas.

The large cargo ship is apparently 230m in length and it weighs a staggering 42,121 tonnes. The historic docking comes as the Port of Cork has begun its expansion phase in Ringaskiddy, which will see more vessels of similar size docking at the port in the future.

The historic moment was welcomed by the Port of Cork Commercial Manager, Captain Michael McCarthy who told reporters, “There are very little restrictions at Ringaskiddy Deepwater Berth, so when it comes to handling a vessel of this size, the port is more than capable.

“In the future we would hope to see more of these size vessels calling, as our port expands to meet the needs of our own customers and the needs of the global shipping community.”
