Holohan says Ireland is in a very fragile state and things are about to get a whole lot worse

In a letter given to the Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly, the National Public Health Emergency Team said the Covid-19 situation remains very fragile given the high number of confirmed cases.

Ireland’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tony Holohan has said the death rate from Covid-19 is around six deaths per day or 180 deaths per month.

According to NPHET, the Omicron variety will become the dominant variety in Ireland in the next four to five days.

Omicron has risen from 1% of new Covid cases here last week to 14% earlier this week, up to 27% yesterday and 35% today.

NPHET estimates that the new variant spreads two to four times faster than the delta variant with fears that case numbers could rise to 20,000 cases a day in January.
