Housing Minister under further pressure after backing co-living development proposals to ease the housing crisis

The Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy has yet again come under scrutiny after he seemingly backed plans that would see co-living apartment blocks being built in order to ease the homeless crisis.

Minister Murphy has been blasted by opposition TD’s and homeless advocacy groups alike after he suggested that such developments are a plausible option.

It is understood that Minister Murphy has backed a development that could be built in Dun Laoghaire, offering 16.5 square metre bedrooms (around the size of a disabled parking space) and see over 40 people using one kitchen.

In a post on Twitter responding to the proposed development Barta Capital, Murphy said the plans were “exciting”, before stating: “CoLiving is one option as part of bringing greater choice into the housing market. Works in other cities across world.”

“We wouldn’t judge concept of houses on one planning app. & should not do that here.”

“Politicians trying to restrict choice for younger generations is wrong.”

However opposition TD’s including Labour’s Brendan Howlin has slammed idea calling the idea ludicrous and nothing more than trying to erode public housing standards.

It is thought that if the project is approved, co-living apartments could cost €1,300 per month to rent.
