animal abuse

After the outrage that followed the news of a Jack Russell Terrier dog named Marvin being cruelly killed in the Mayfield area of Cork City, Gardai and animal welfare groups called for witenesses or people that could share any information that helps them to locate the responsibles of the cruel act.

The Cork Dog Action Welfare Group mentioned through social media that there is CCTV footage in the area. They also called to action through their statement:

“FOR MARVIN’S SAKE please channel your outrage and sadness into something positive and take a few minutes to email your local TD’s, and Minister Coveney ([email protected]) and ask them to ensure dogs like Marvin did not die in vain and that people who abuse animals will be held to account for their actions”.

So, what to do if you wish to report a case of animal cruelty in Ireland?

You can address a Gardai and alert them of the situation or you can contact the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA), via phone 1890 515 515 or through their website, where you can fill a form to directly report a case of animal cruelty. This reports are dealt with confidentiality and informers are only contacted if further information is needed to deal with the concern in a timely manner.

Animal cruelty cases can fall into several categories: general neglect; gross, cruel or malicious neglect; intentional abuse, torture; animal hoarding; organised abuse (i.e. dog fighting), and animal cruelty on the Internet (sharing content that depicts or encourages animal cruelty). As these are all illegal acts, anyone who witnesses them does right in notifying the competent authorities.
