HSE claims there’s a huge surge in respiratory illness last week with 985 cases mostly in children




According to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC), there was a huge increase in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) cases last week, with 368 people hospitalised, reports Breaking News.

The common respiratory disease, which particularly affects infants and young children, saw 985 cases reported last week.

The number of people infected with the virus has already reached record levels.

The HPSC said that a total of 3,644 cases of the disease have been reported this winter season, reports Breaking News.

A total of three disease outbreaks occurred in private households last week, and there have been seven outbreaks of respiratory diseases so far this winter.

In terms of other illnesses, 172 cases of influenza were reported and a total of 56 people were hospitalized due to influenza. A total of 444 cases of Covid-19 were reported last week, with 192 hospitalised with Covid, reports Breaking News.
