The HSE Chief Executive Paul Reid has revealed that the over 85s will receive the first dose of their Covid-19 vaccine next week.
Speaking this afternoon, Reid said that 12,000 doses will be distributed to GP practices across the country.
Reid said that the reason why the first delivery is relatively small is because the health service wants to start the programme safely and effectively.
He added that there are a number of logistical challenges in terms of delivering the Pfizer and BioNtech vaccine, but the HSE plans to build up the process with more doses expected to be delivered across the country in the coming weeks.
