HSE criticised after leaving the words woman and women out of Cervical cancer information

The HSE has come in for questioning after they removed the words woman and women from it’s online Cervical cancer information page and booklets.

It is understood that the issue has come to light after a woman contacted RTE’s Liveline programme to voice concerns that the words had been removed.

Speaking to the programme the woman who said she has no objections and supports the use of gender neutral language in the information, also stated that she was concerned that the words woman and women had been removed.

The caller who felt that words woman and women should also be included, also pointed out that by removing the words certain disadvantaged people and people with limited English would struggle to find the information they need.

The woman stated that some people reading the text “a person with a cervix” may not realise that the information applies to them.

However according to The Irish Times, the HSE has since stated that the decision to remove the words was made in order to make the programme accessible and inclusive to everyone.
