HSE say they issued guidance over vaccines four days after Coombe give leftover vaccines to staff family members

The HSE say they issued guidance in regards to leftover vaccines four days after the roll-out plan.

According to RTE News, the HSE said that they issued guidance over excess vaccines on January 12th.

The news comes after it was revealed that the Coombe Hospital gave 16 leftover vaccines to family members of staff on January 8th.

It is understood that the revelation has now led to the Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly to call for a full account of what occurred at the hospital.

Although management at the hospital have apologised for the incident, they claim that the vaccines would have been wasted given that they were leftover after 1,100 staff received the vaccine on Friday January 8th.

It is believed that nine of those to receive the extra vaccine were over the age 70, whilst the remaining seven were across different age groups.

Responding to the issue regarding leftover vaccines, the HSE says they issued guidance calling on all medical centres to issue any potential leftover vaccines to health workers on standby lists.

They added that centres should be establishing standby lists for frontline staff.

Meanwhile the Rotunda Hospital has confirmed that 37 non hospital staff were given the vaccine.

In a statement the hospital said that of the 93 vials they received they noticed that there was excess vaccines that would have expired within hours at the end of the first day.

The hospital say the vaccines were given to GPs and other vulnerable groups within the community.
