Humphreys considers lowering the fuel allowance age to over 66




According to Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys, she is looking into the prospect of allowing anyone over 66 to receive the fuel allowance, reports RTE.

She said it was a “very, very welcome measure” that had been extended to those over 70 in the previous year’s budget, reports RTE.

Speaking in Tullamore, the minister stated: “I am considering lowering that age to 66 when they retire this year. I am considering it [for Budget 2025].”

She added: “The one thing we don’t want is older people in their own home afraid to turn on the heating,” reports RTE.

The Minister also stated there might be a child benefit double payment at Christmas.

Presently, nearly 177,000 families aged 70 and above get fuel subsidy.

It is paid for 28 weeks, from September to April, at a rate of €33 per week.The Minister also stated there might be a child benefit double payment at Christmas, reports RTE.
