Hundreds attend funeral of Galway camogie player Kate Moran who died in tragic accident

Hundreds of people lined the streets of Monivea in Co Galway today to give Kate Moran a send off that she deserved.

A close community in Galway has had to deal with a tragic and devastating accident after the All-Ireland GAA winner sadly died during a game with her local club.

Athenry mourns the death of Kate Moran after she suffered a serious head injury in an accident at a senior camogie game. It’s understood that she was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

20-yr-old Kate is understood to have been hit by a sliotar and a hurley as she tried to block the ball in a league match against Ardrahan. The game was immediately stopped as three ambulances rushed to the scene to treat Kate, who was then taken to Galway University Hospital.

The Monivea native was in intensive care overnight before sadly passing away on Tuesday with tributes pouring in.

A vigil was held in the village with a huge funeral taking place this morning with her jersey draped across the coffin.
