Hundreds, including many not born in Ireland, queue as new development goes on sale in Dublin




Hundreds of people lined up for the latest release of homes in a new housing development in Dublin 22, located between Clondalkin and Lucan, reports RTE.

The high turnout highlights the overwhelming demand for housing and the ongoing supply shortage, with some individuals arriving the night before to secure a unit at the Seven Mills development.

Around 40 homes—starting at €480,000 for a three-bedroom—were made available at 8am on Lockhouse Way. All were sold by 10am, reports RTE.

Many hopeful buyers were left disappointed, including local resident Shane Kelly.

“I am from Clondalkin and want to stay living here. It’s so disheartening,” he said, describing the housing crisis as “appalling,” reports RTE.

He expressed concern that house hunters are now resorting to sleeping in their cars overnight just for a chance to purchase a home.

Others shared similar frustrations after just missing out on a home.

“We were five minutes too late,” said one woman, visibly distressed about not securing a property, reports RTE.

Marie Mamayuk, who arrived after 8am, said she realised quickly that her chances were slim when she found out that many people had queued overnight.

She has been house hunting for a year and noted that prices keep rising. She added that finding a home in Dublin is especially tough as a solo buyer.

Amanda and Cynan were hoping to be high on the cancellation list after learning that all homes had sold.

Des Donnelly, Director of Hooke and McDonald, commented: “today is a clear reflection that there is a supply issue generally,” reports RTE.

Many attendees voiced frustration over saving for years and having mortgage approvals around €500,000, yet still being unable to purchase a home.

In a separate development, the housing organisation Respond revealed that nearly 2,000 applications have been received for 20 cost rental homes in Clongriffin.

Applications will close on Tuesday, reports RTE.

These homes are part of a larger plan to deliver 64 rental properties at the Griffin Point development in Dublin 13.

Cost rental units are targeted at individuals or families earning €66,000 or less annually and unable to afford market-rate rentals.

The initial batch includes ten one-bedroom and ten two-bedroom apartments, offered at rents that are 25% below market levels, reports RTE.
